The Satyagraha House Holidays

Every building tells a story, but none tell theirs as well as Satyagraha House. Located in Johannesburg’s leafy Orchards neighbourhood, this guest house began life in 1907 as the home of German-born architect, Hermann Kallenbach. Inspired by rural kraals (domed huts used to keep cattle and livestock), these thatch roofs and circular white-washed rondavels would go on to house some of the world’s greatest minds, including Mahatma Gandhi (between 1908-1901). In fact, it was on Kallenbach’s peaceful mezzanine that Gandhi conceptualised ‘Satyagraha’ (or ‘truth force’). The concept, a nonviolent resistance to racism and social injustice, became an influential force and changed the lives of thousands in both South Africa and India. Since then, Kallenbach’s home has been passed through various hands and undergone multiple transformations. Today, it operates as both a museum and guest house, restored to its original spirit with antique furnishings, exposed fireplaces and natural linens throughout its seven rooms. Enjoy al fresco dinners made exclusively from the property’s very own vegetable garden, and learn your warrior pose from your mountain pose in yoga classes on Gandhi’s mezzanine.
